Marine scientists predict that the oceans' coral reefs could die in 50 to 75 years. Scientists believes that this is due to general increase in the atmospheric temperature and increase in atmospheric CO2 (carbon dioxide). The increase in CO2 levels makes the ocean more acidic. Warmer and more acidic oceans causes coral bleaching and death. This study reported on 14 Dec 07 in the journal Science stated that the welfare of 100 million people in coastal communities is at stake. The study calls for drastic action to save as much as possible of the coral reef.
